Jim Creek Snowshoe

Copyright 2009 Jan Gorski - Jim Creek Trail near Winter Park

If you are looking for a nice quick snowshoe (or cross country ski) trail near Winter Park Jim Creek is the place for you. Park at the trailhead for the Discovery Trail at the Bonfils Outdoor Center off of US-40, just across from the ski area. A signpost describes the different loops available as part of the handicapped Outdoor Center trail system. Take the trail to the right of the sign that soon crosses the creek over a fairly long bridge. Travel up the wide, well traveled trail for about 0.6 mile to the James Peak Wilderness sign and a small signpost denoting the Jim Creek Trail. The trail narrows here but it is a lovely walk through forest and shrubs.

You will soon have fabulous views of James Peak in all it’s glory. The hiking books I’ve read say the trail distance is about 3.0 miles in length before it reaches private property. I’ve always arrived too late in the day to explore the entire trail so if anyone else out there has, please comment on what you know about the potential distance and sights to see on this trail.
